Local law enforcement taking back unwanted presecription drugs April 30
On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local law enforcement agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescriptions.
National experts now advise that the usual methods for disposing of unused medicines--flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash--pose potential safety and health hazards.
The prescription drug drop-off locations are:
Michigan State Police Post, 3401 Cooper St. Jackson, MI 49201 (517) 780-4580;
Jackson City Police Department, 216 E. Washington Ave., Jackson, MI 49201, (517) 788-4100;
Grass Lake Community Pharmacy, 112 E. Michigan, Grass Lake, MI 49240, (517) 522-4100.
This service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds--121 tons--of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites.
More than seven million Americans abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
National studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
The Jackson County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition will also be hosting a Prescription Drug Abuse Educational Panel on May 3 from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at the Allegiance Health Auditorium located in the Charles Anderson/North Building.
