Area gardening centers helping with GLS fundraiser

Grass Lake Sanctuary, a non-profit retreat center and nature preserve, announced a fundraiser, called "Growums," recently. The money raised will provide support for retreat programs during the season of 2011. These programs include Women's Wellness retreats for breast cancer survivors and a retreat for children and their families. The events will take place at GLS in Manchester. The Growums fundraiser will continue until the end of May. Growums can provide children and their families an opportunity to plant and grow their own food. The participant simply needs the kit, a sunny spot and containers for their plants. These interactive garden kits include pizza, taco herb, salad, stir fry and ratatouille. Places that sell Growums garden kits for GLS include: Downtown Home and Garden, Arbor Farms and The Aprill Wellness Center in Ann Arbor; the Grass Hopper Garden in Brighton, Nature's Garden Center in Saline, The Garden Mill and Farmer's Supply in Chelsea. "Part of our mission is to build connections so that people have a sense of community, a sense of belonging and a sense of connectedness that inspires and motivates them to eat better and exercise more," said Egan, executive director of GLS. "Families can get involved with garden to plate food, eating better, and building connections as a family. It fits the trends that are happening with food - eat locally, grow it yourself as well as becoming a beautiful family experience," he said. GLS also will offer outdoor oven roasted pizza made with fresh Growums herbs and vegetables for the community events.
