The Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative, with the help of numerous local attorney volunteers, began its 2011 "Suits 4 Success" campaign last Friday.
Steve Tramontin, this year's campaign chairperson said, "It was great to see contributors from many different realms of the local legal community support Suits 4 Success. The effect that a fresh set of clothes can have on the confidence and ultimate success of a job applicant cannot be underestimated.
Tramontin noted committee volunteers were "very pleased" with the quantity as well as the quality of the clothing donated at the kick off event.
"We hope it was just the beginning. To potential donors still holding on--and we know who you are--our Second Chance Event is Wednesday, May 11 at the Earle Restaurant from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please bring your donation and join us in food, drink, and making this year's clothing drive an even greater success."
Another committee member, Kim Easter said the committee ''is so delighted to support the MPRI, which is truly reducing recidivism among Michigan prisoners.''
Committee Co-Chairperson S. Joy Gaines, who has been extensively involved with the campaign in its initial two years, said, "I was so moved when Marti described the reaction of one of the men when he tried on his 'new' clothes. It's amazing that a little thing like a tie or shoes can make such a big difference for another person."
Committee members agreed, "We are so grateful to the legal community for their clothing and cash donations that make Suits 4 Success possible."
Two Americorps MPRI staff were at the event as well and noted that, last year, 32 individuals were clothed from the Washtenaw County S4S campaign donations and several got jobs after interviewing wearing the clothes.
