Senate committee approves bill for Patriot Week

On May 3, 2011, Senate Bill 282, permanently recognizing Patriot Week, was unanimously approved by the State Senate Committee on Military and Veteran Affairs & Homeland Security. The bill will now be sent to the Senate for its consideration. The Senate Committee acted following testimony by Patriot Week co-creators Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and his 12-year old daughter Leah. Their testimony was enthusiastically received, and the committee members were particularly impressed with 12-year old Leah Warren. Some staffers remarked that it was the best presentation they had ever seen. "Leah and I are so appreciative of having the Senate Committee unanimously approve this legislation," said Judge Warren. "If we are to maintain our liberty in a free republic, our citizens must have a deeply rooted understanding of our Constitution, its generating history, and its underlying First Principles. Passage of Senate Bill 282 is an important step in reinvigorating the spirit of America." Patriot Week renews America's spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorist's attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of when the United States Constitution was signed). "The Patriot Flag--honoring the victims of 9/11--was flying at the State Capitol while we testified," Leah Warren remarked. "The Senate Committee's approval of the Patriot Week Bill at that time was a fitting tribute to them and America." The bill still faces the hurdle of the House Committee. Following Tuesday's testimony, Judge Warren and Leah met Wednesday to testify on House Bill 4464, which is identical to the Senate Patriot Week Bill. The House Committee is scheduled to vote on its bill this week. Published: Mon, May 9, 2011
