Free Child ID Day to Commemorate National Missing Children's Day

Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson, joined by Commissioners Nancy Quarles and Helaine Zack, will host a special free Child ID Day Event on Saturday, May 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Southfield Civic Center Parks and Recreation Building located at 26000 Evergreen Road. At this event, children will be fingerprinted and provided valuable personal safety and internet safety information given to parents and guardians. Commissioners will be giving Child Safety Identification Kits as part of the "Safety Kids! Great Kids! Child Safety Kits & Youth Program" at the annual City of Southfield's Princess and Super Heroes Day event. Jackson will submit a resolution before the General Government Committee of the Oakland County Board of Commissioners today to commemorate National Missing Children's Day in Oakland County. This resolution will encourage residents to "Take 25 Minutes" to talk to their children about safety which is an attempt to prevent a child from becoming one of the nearly 800,000 children that are reported missing by the U.S. Department of Justice each year. To commemorate National Missing Children's Day, former President Ronald Reagan proclaimed May 25th in 1983 as National Missing Children's Day. May 25th is the designated date that serves as an annual reminder to the nation to renew efforts to reunite missing children with their families, remember those who are still missing, and make child protection a national priority. The commissioners resolution and Child ID Day event will bring awareness to the fact that Child Safety is so important, now more than ever, with the advent of the internet which has become a useful tool for child predators.
