Senate approves Patriot Week bill

On Tuesday the State Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 282, which would permanently recognize Patriot Week. Patriot Week was co-created by Oakland County Circuit Judge Michael Warren and his 12-year old daughter Leah. "We really appreciate the Senate's leadership on this issue," said Leah Warren. "Patriot Week will excite students and the general public to learn about - and celebrate - what makes America the greatest nation in world history." "Senate passage of the Patriot Week bill puts Michigan in a national leadership position in renewing the American spirit," remarked Judge Warren. "All Americans need to take time to remember what keeps us free, and Patriot Week is vital to renewing the American spirit. If we are to maintain our liberty in a free republic, our citizens must have a deeply rooted understanding of our Constitution, its generating history, and its underlying First Principles. Passage of Senate Bill 282 is an important step in maintaining our free republic." Patriot Week renews America's spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorist's attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of when the United States Constitution was signed). The bill still faces the hurdle of the House of Representatives. Judge Warren and Leah have already provided testimony on House Bill 4464, before the House Committee on Military and Veteran Affairs & Homeland Security which is identical to the Senate Patriot Week Bill. The House Committee enthusiastically received the testimony, but no vote has yet been scheduled. Published: Thu, May 19, 2011
