Oakland County hosts preparedness training
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson invites residents to Citizen Preparedness Training hosted by Oakland County Homeland Security Division on Saturday, June 4. There will be two sessions from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 3 at the Executive Office Building Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road, Building 41 West, in Waterford.
Participants will learn basic skills for disaster preparedness including understanding the dangers associated with man-made and natural disasters, making a plan and creating a disaster kit.
"Recent news coverage of deadly tornados which struck communities across Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri is a sobering reminder why families need an emergency plan," said Patterson. "This training will provide residents with the information they need to create an emergency plan at home and learn about the warning signs and how to respond to natural and man-made disasters."
The training is free. To register, contact the Oakland County Homeland Security Division at (248) 858-5300.
Tornadoes are most prevalent April through July including in Michigan. Severe thunderstorms, flooding and high winds can also cause devastation throughout a community. Residents should take measures to actively prepare in the event that severe weather strikes Oakland County. Having plans and a preparedness kit before a disaster can help families and businesses cope more effectively during an incident.
