Pontiac's emergency financial manager says situation getting worse

PONTIAC (AP) -- Pontiac's emergency financial manager says the struggling city's finances are getting worse. Detroit Free Press reports that Michael Stampfler detailed the setbacks in a letter dated Wednesday addressed to taxpayers. They include that tax revenues are expected to drop by $2.6 million this year and state revenue sharing is expected to fall by $2 million. Stampfler says that even if the city lays off every employee it still would be $1.5 million in deficit. Pontiac on Monday received state approval to cancel union contract protections for 10 police dispatchers as part of a cost-cutting effort that includes cutting the police department. The contract may be voided under the state's new law expanding powers for emergency financial managers. Pontiac's law enforcement will be handled by the Oakland County sheriff's department.
