Committee approves Patriot Week bill

On Tuesday, June 14, House Bill 4464, permanently recognizing Patriot Week, was unanimously approved by the State House Committee on Military and Veteran Affairs & Homeland Security. The bill will now be sent to the full House for its consideration. The House Committee acted in light of previous testimony by Patriot Week co-creators Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and his daughter Leah. Their testimony was enthusiastically received, and the committee members were particularly impressed with 12-year old Leah Warren.
"If we are to maintain our liberty in a free republic, our citizens must have a deeply rooted understanding of our Constitution, its generating history, and its underlying First Principles. Patriot Week, and the passage of House Bill 4464, are vitally important in reinvigorating the spirit of America.
"We are very grateful for having the House Committee unanimously approve (11-0) this legislation," said Leah Warren. "This week unifies everyone to celebrate what makes America the greatest nation in world history."
Patriot Week renews America's spirit by celebrating the First Principles, Founding Fathers and other Patriots, vital documents and speeches, and flags that make America the greatest nation in world history. Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorist's attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of when the United States Constitution was signed). More information can be found at www.PatriotWeek.org.
Representative Gail Haines, sponsor of the bill, reflected, "Declaring Patriot Week in Michigan designates a time for us to truly honor our history and milestones that we often forget about in the day to day shuffle."
The bill still faces the hurdle of approval by the full House.
