Patterson says county won't merge with Pontiac
AUBURN HILLS (AP) -- Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson says he'll work to help overcome Pontiac's financial problems but says the county isn't in a position to merge with the city.
Patterson made the statement Wednesday to about 50 people at Baker College in Auburn Hills. The Pontiac Regional Chamber sponsored the event.
Pontiac's budget deficit is expected to reach $12.5 million by June 2012.
State-appointed financial manager Michael Stampfler proposed in a letter to Patterson last week that Pontiac's city services merge or combine with county operations. Stampfler says Pontiac could face bankruptcy.
The Detroit Free Press says Patterson told the forum that he met earlier Wednesday with Gov. Rick Snyder to discuss Pontiac's situation. Patterson says the emergency manager "really jumped the gun" and says Snyder won't let Pontiac go bankrupt.
