Judge rules Kilpatrick can't profit from book
DETROIT (AP) -- A judge says the sister of imprisoned ex-Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and other relatives cannot receive profits from the sale of his memoirs.
Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner wrote Monday in an order that Ayanna Kilpatrick and her company AKtion Enterprises are agents of the former mayor and must forfeit any book proceeds into an escrow account.
Groner also ordered the publishers of "Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick" not to "pay any money" to him, his family members, agents, or others.
Half of the gross receipts or any money payable under a contact with AKtion enterprises also must go into the escrow account.
The escrow will go toward restitution Kwame Kilpatrick owes the city as part of his 2008 plea in a criminal case.
