Johnson thanks legislators for support of military license plates for motorcycles

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson recently thanked members of the state Legislature for their support of bills that give veterans the option of purchasing motorcycle license plates that feature the insignia of their military service branch. The bulk of the legislation was passed last Wednesday and the secretary looks forward to Governor Rick Snyder signing it into law.
"I'm grateful to legislators for their quick work on this legislation to honor those who through military service have put the interests of their country and fellow citizens ahead of their own," Johnson said. "Veterans will soon be able to display their armed forces branch on their motorcycle license plate-the first time that has been an option in Michigan."
The service branch license plates, which feature the official seals of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and National Guard, in color, have been available for automobiles since last month. The motorcycle versions will be created by a bill sponsored by Sen. Judy Emmons, R-Sheridan, and will be available for purchase after July 4. Legislation creating a National Guard motorcycle plate is sponsored by Rep. Matt Huuki, R-Atlantic Mine, is expected approved by the end of the summer.
The cost for a veteran plate is the annual registration fee for the motorcycle plus a one-time $5 service fee for the standard white plate or a one-time $10 fee for the Spectacular Peninsulas graphic plate.
