Twenty years ago, it was created to become a “proactive organization of diverse attorneys with a mission of promoting legal practice opportunities for minorities and women and to facilitate equal justice opportunities for all citizens.”

Today, the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association has more than fulfilled its mission, continuing a “rich history of service and commitment to diversity in the legal community.”

The work of Straker Bar founders and current members will be celebrated this evening at its 20th Anniversary Kickoff Cocktail Party and Silent Auction, an event schedulef from 6-9 p.m. at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Rd.

“The proceeds from the event and the silent auction will be used to fund our educational programming and scholarships,” said Kay Stanfield Spinks, co-chairperson of the fund-raising event. “We have some magnificent auction items and expect this to be a wonderful event for lawyers and judges to enjoy.”

Stanfield Spinks, a former magistrate for the 46th District Court in Southfield, served as the second president of the Straker Bar (1992-93) and was the first president of its foundation, a post she held from 1998 to 2003.

She is co-chairing the event with Stephanie Jones of Harness, Dickey & Pierce, one of the key sponsors of the fund-raiser along with Comerica Bank and General Motors.

Tickets for the party are $45, a price that includes “chef-created appetizers” and the opportunity to enjoy a silent auction that is rich with “fabulous prizes that have been donated by members and various individuals and businesses,” according to Stanfield Spinks, who doubles as director of Portfolio Development and Special Counsel for Mayfield Gentry Realty Advisors based in Detroit.

The auction will be open until 8 p.m. and among the items up for bid include: two round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the domestic U.S.; a Marriott Getaway Package; a six-hour spa treatment; dance lessons; restaurant gift certificates; a golf lesson from Terri Anthony-Ryan, women’s golf coach at the University of Detroit Mercy; tickets to various sporting events; and much more.

“We have more than 40 items up for auction, and the proceeds will help fund our scholarship initiatives for deserving students,” Stanfield Spinks said.
