ABA webinar November 30 to explore the state of civil legal aid in America

Three experts and a prominent legal writer will discuss the state of civil legal aid in America in a special online program November 30.

The one-hour webinar — “Civil Legal Aid in America: A Challenge for Equal Justice” — coincides with the release of the 2023 ABA Profile of the Legal Profession, an annual compilation of statistics and trends among lawyers, judges and law students.

New to the Profile report this year is a count of paid legal aid lawyers nationwide. The report will show differences in the number of legal aid attorneys among the 50 states and even within states. The report will highlight areas that have many legal aid lawyers and places where there are few.

The webinar panel will include:

• Lincoln Caplan (moderator) – Yale University lecturer and author of law and public affairs books and articles, including “The Invisible Justice Problem”

• Rebecca Sandefur – Arizona State University professor, director of the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics and a faculty fellow with the American Bar Foundation

• Radhika Singh – National Legal Aid & Defender Association vice president for civil legal services and strategic policy initiatives

• Jeniece Jones – Executive director of the Public Justice Center, a Maryland statewide civil legal service provider

The program will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. EST on Thursday, Nov. 30, on Zoom. Registration is required to attend.
