State Bar members qualify for discounts at ABA Techshow
The 25th annual ABA Techshow will take place April 11-13 in Chicago. Techshow offers attorneys insights into new forms of technology, and how these can be used to enhance the practice of law. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker, Professor Larry Lessig, director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, and professor at Harvard Law School. It will also include more than 50 informative sessions on new technology, and direct access to over 100 exhibitors with new products. Members of the State Bar of Michigan are eligible for substantial discounted registration rates at Techshow. The standard registration fee is $1,025, but SBM members can register for only $875. Those who register prior to Feb. 25, 2011 will save an additional $200. Special registration rates are also available for paralegals ($525; $425 early bird) and law students ($50).

Procedure for bail bondsmen for Oakland County courts
Pursuant to MCLA 750.167(b), the Judges of the Circuit Court are to annually compile and maintain an up-to-date list of the names of persons engaged in the business of becoming surety upon bonds for compensation in criminal cases. The Court will circulate the list to the appropriate agencies in accordance with the statute.

Accordingly, the Court Administrator has prepared two applications for bondsmen: one for persons backed by insurance and the other for persons backed by real property. Persons or businesses may apply for inclusion on the list under either category or both. Copies of the bail bondsman application are available in the Court Administration Office. All applications for the 2011 Bail Bondsman List must be requested through the Court Administration Office, 1200 North Telegraph Road, Pontiac Michigan 48341 and submitted no later than October 29, 2010. Nominations sought for MDTC Golden Gavel Award
The Michigan Defense Trial Counsel is currently accepting nominations for the Seventh Annual Young Lawyers Section Golden Gavel Award, which will be presented on Friday May 20 during the MDTC Awards Banquet at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort in Mt Pleasant.

Nominations are welcome along with letters of recommendation from any source which supports the candidate. Candidates need not be a current member of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel. However, each must be a member in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan, and serve as defense counsel.
