2011 Treasure of Detroit Gala to be held at DIA, March 26
Wayne State University Law’s 14th annual Treasure of Detroit Gala will be held at 5:30-10 p.m. on Saturday, March 26 at the Detroit Institute of Arts.

Since its inception in 1998, the Treasure of Detroit Gala has been Wayne Law’s premiere event for honoring those who have made a lasting contribution to the practice of law, as well as to the growth and success of the Law School. The event brings together some of the legal community’s brightest minds and scholars. This year’s honorees have not yet been announced.

This year’s gala will feature an alumni reunion reception for all classes beginning at 5:30 p.m., paying special tribute to this year’s featured class: the class of 1970. The event will also feature a silent auction, awards program and dinner.

“The Treasure of Detroit Gala provides Wayne Law alumni and friends a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with each other and the Law School, and to pay tribute to those who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and society,” Dean Robert M. Ackerman said. “I look forward to celebrating with Wayne Law students, alumni, faculty and friends at the Detroit Institute of Arts once again in March.”

Sponsorship opportunities for the event are available, and the Law School encourages its friends to participate. For information regarding sponsorship opportunities or giving to Wayne Law in general, please contact Michael Silverstein in the Law School’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations at (313) 577-9238 or silverstein@wayne.edu.

Biological dad from NY loses paternity case
LANSING (AP) — A New York lawyer who is the biological father of a Michigan girl has lost a key court ruling in his attempt to get parental rights.

The Michigan appeals court says Anthony Pecoraro can’t be granted paternity because the child’s mother was married to another man at the time of birth in 2002.

Under Michigan law, the court says a child born during marriage belongs to the married couple, even if Pecoraro is the biological father. The court refuses to honor New York court rulings favoring the Buffalo-area man.

The decision was released Wednesday. Pecoraro lawyer Jeff Cojocar calls it “absurd.”

He says Pecoraro wants to have a relationship with the girl and support her financially but the mother is resisting. A request for comment was left with her lawyer.

Trial ordered for mom who faked son’s cancer
ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan woman accused of drugging her 12-year-old son to make it appear he was a cancer patient will stand trial.

Carol Lynn Schnuphase waived her right Wednesday to have a preliminary examination. A judge in the northern Detroit suburb of Roseville set a Jan. 31 arraignment in Macomb County Circuit Court.

Schnuphase is charged with second-degree child abuse and taking money under false pretenses.

Authorities say the 47-year-old drugged her son, and shaved his hair and eyebrows. A prosecutor says she received $7,500 from a church fundraiser, besides other donations. The money was used to pay bills.

Her son is in foster care.

Defense attorney Dominic Greco says Schnuphase didn't want her son to testify Wednesday.
