Assistance program and hospital to host banquet fundraiser
Brighton Hospital and the State Bar of Michigan’s Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program will present an “Evening of Enlightenment: Supporting Wellness in the Legal Profession” from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 29 at Suburban Collection Showplace (formerly Rock Financial Showplace), located at 46100 Grand River Ave., Novi.
The Evening of Enlightenment is a banquet that will raise funds to benefit the Richard L. Steinberg Memorial Treatment Fund, which was created to assist lawyers who are in need of mental health and/or substance use treatment, but do not have available resources to pay for it.
Timothy D. Batdorf, an attorney and author of “The Lawyer’s Guide to Being Human,” and Martha D. Burkett, a Licensed Professional Counselor, and administrator of the State Bar of Michigan Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program, will serve as keynote speakers. They will discuss the relationships between the historical framework of the legal profession, self care, and professional responsibility. They will also explore the correlations between trauma, stress, and the deterioration of mental, physical, and spiritual health that can lead to mental health and/or substance use disorders among attorneys.
To attend the Evening of Enlightenment, register by Friday, April 15. To register online or download a printable registration form visit www.michbar.org/generalinfo/ljap/home.cfm. For additional information call (810) 220-5518 or e-mail events@brightonhospital.org.
Libraries to dedicate new space in special ceremony April 12
The Oakland County Library Board and the Oakland County Library Foundation will host a ceremony to dedicate the three county libraries (the Adams Pratt Law Library, the Library for the Visually and Physically Impaired and the Research Library) in their new shared facility at the Oakland County Courthouse on Tuesday, April 12 at 3:30 p.m.
The three county libraries were previously housed in three separate areas in the county courthouse. In 2010, the libraries consolidated and moved into one location.
The ceremony will also feature the unveiling of The Steven N. Andrews Constitutional Law Collection. Retired Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Steven N. Andrews served on the Oakland County Library Board from 1986 to 2010. He was the board’s chair from 2001-2010. Upon his retirement from the bench, money was donated to the Oakland County Library Foundation to establish a constitutional law collection in his honor.
