Lawyers are being offered a special treat from the Jewish Ensemble Theatre in West Bloomfield, currently performing the Midwest premiere of the play "Race" by Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Oscar nominee David Mamet.
Sunday, Feb. 19 -- the final day of the play -- has been designated "Lawyer Day at JET," with lawyers and guests getting $5 off per ticket by mentioning they are a practicing attorney. Performances, under director Christopher Bremer, will be at 2 and 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices are usually $38 to $43, $33 to $40 for seniors, and $16 for students.
The play, which opened on Broadway in December 2009 with James Spader, David Alan Grier, Kerry Washington, and Richard Thomas in the cast, focuses on two lead attorneys and a young associate - two black and one white - from a small firm. The three are offered the opportunity to defend a white man charged with the rape of a black woman. The client maintains his innocence, claiming he had consensual sex with a woman who is his lover.
"This is a high level of legal strategy, with the attendant questions about morality and winning. I think every lawyer will be fascinated with this often-discussed tension between the client and the truth," says Artistic Director David Magidson. "And, of course, David Mamet reconciles it all in a uniquely American way."
The cast includes John Manfredi as the accused, Charles Strickland; Hank Bennett and Harold Uriah Hogan as law firm partners Jack Lawson and Henry Brown; and Lisa Lauren Smith as their young associate, Susan.
JET, located at 6600 West Maple Road in West Bloomfield, is an award-winning off-Broadway theater founded in 1989 by Evelyn Orbach, and one of only two professional equity theatres in Oakland County.
JET has been named an Anchor Organization by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs for its outreach programs, particularly for those geared to school children. JET's Youth Education Services -- JET/YES -- is an educational outreach initiative that has reached more than 500,000 youngsters.
