Charity event to help families living in poverty

Access to Bankruptcy Court (ABC), a State Bar of Michigan “Access to Justice” program, will host its annual Charity Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on Wednesday, July 18 at the Empire Restaurant & Lounge in Shelby Twp.

Organizers of the event, scheduled from 6-9 p.m., say the charity was formed after local attorneys, judges and educators recognized a need for poverty-stricken individuals suffering financial hardship to obtain legal representation.

According to those connected to the charity, one ABC client was homeless, living in his truck in the woods, disabled and had his monthly Social Security disability check garnished at 60 percent for an old debt. The man could no longer live on what he was alloved to keep.

He was provided with bankruptcy representation that allowed him to keep more of his income.

The focus of the program is to provide those living in poverty with relief from mounting medical bills and other debts.

Tickets for the charity event are $35 in advance and $45 at the door.
