SBM Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section to present scholarships at annual meeting

The State Bar of Michigan Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section will present scholarships to three students and offer a seminar to help paralegals and legal assistants update their trial skills from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, Sept. 21 at the SBM Annual Meeting in DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.

In a ceremony during its 9 a.m. business meeting, the section will present scholarships worth a total of $2,250. This will be followed by the swearing in of the section board, including Chair-Elect, Piper Smith, Chair, Ex-Officio Cheryl Nodarse, Secretary Renee Jent, Treasurer Marianne Delaney, and Council Members Denise E. Gau, Teri Rhadigan, Doreen Defauw, and Kelly Preuss.

Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge Attorney Kristen E. Ray will teach a seminar at 10 a.m. on how paralegals should update their jury trial tools under revised rules, MCR 2.512 and 2.513. She will cover how to deal with preliminary instructions, trial notebooks, deposition summaries, scheduling of expert testimony, juror questions to witnesses, juror discussion of evidence, jury view, summaries of evidence, final instructions, and deliberation.
