 Conyers to moderate discussion on shooting of Ferguson (Mo.) youth

Representative John Conyers Jr. (D-13th District) will join Rev. Dr. Wendell Anthony, president of the Detroit Branch NAACP, for a community discussion this Friday, Aug. 22 on the background of the tragic shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. The event will take place from 6-8 p.m. at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 Outer Drive in Detroit. Congressman John Conyers Jr. will moderate the panel of community leaders from the Detroit Chapter of the NAACP, Arab-American Civil Rights League, American Civil Liberties Union, Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, Detroit Police Chief James Craig, Detroit Police Commissioner Donnell White, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, and two youths. Other invited guests include: U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, members of the Michigan Congressional delegation, and other elected officials.  The issue to be raised involves, “How do we reduce violence against minority youths, particularly African American, Hispanic, and Latino.”

 

The independence of  Scotland lecture to be held at Wayne Law 

Scotland will hold an independence referendum next month, which will be the topic of a September 4 program at Wayne Law School. The lecture will be from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. at the Law School Building, Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium,  471 W. Palmer in Detroit. There are many hotly disputed legal issues involved in a potential separation. Who gets UK property? Who is responsible for debts? Who gets access to North Sea oil? Money in Judicial Politics to be focus of panel discussion

Three former Michigan Supreme Court Justices, Honorable Marilyn J. Kelly (retired, Wayne Faculty); James L. Ryan (retired, also a former judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit); Clifford Taylor (retired); and renowned reporter Peter Overby of NPR, all explore the First Amendment contours of money as speech. The free event will be on Sept. 9 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Law School Building, Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer in Detroit. For more information about this event, contact John P.
