 Dickinson Wright to host seminar on HIPAA

Dickinson Wright PLLC is pleased to announce that the firm will host “Are You HIPAA-Notized Yet? The Latest Insights and Developments” on Friday, September 26 in Troy.

 The seminar will feature attorneys from Dickinson Wright’s interdisciplinary healthcare practice group and topics will include: basic privacy and security requirements; practical tips for HIPAA compliance; new rules for notice of privacy practices, business associates and breach notification; responding to subpoenas and other requests for health information; and HIPAA enforcement. Attendees may be eligible for Continuing Education Units pending with the Health Care Compliance Association.
 
 The event will kick off with registration and  continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. with the seminar running from 8-11 a.m. The event will take place at Bank of America Building, 2600 West Big Beaver Road, Troy.

Legal Aid and Defender expands partnership with OLHSA?in Pontiac

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) has been helping Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA) celebrate its 50th anniversary by conducting free outreach clinics on civil legal services at OLHSA’s office in Pontiac as well as its office in Ferndale.
 
 LAD conducts the clinics for income-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties throughout the tri-county area. It began conducting clinics at OLHSA’s office in Ferndale, now located at 1956 Hilton Road, in 2004, according to Kelly Bidelman, managing attorney of LAD’s Oakland County office in Pontiac and vice chair of OLHSA’s South Oakland Advisory Council.

 This June, LAD began conducting clinics at OLHSA’s office at 196 Cesar E. Chavez Ave., Pontiac, Bidelman said. 

“We expanded our outreaches to include OLHSA’s Pontiac location since OLHSA’s Head Start program and the Pontiac Academy of Excellence are located there. We wanted to make sure the parents had access to our civil legal services,” she said.

“OLHSA is grateful for our partnership with the Legal Aid and Defender Association and appreciative of the legal assistance they provide to OLHSA clients,” OLHSA CEO Ron Borngesser said. “We look forward to continuing this partnership and serving our local residents in times of need.”

Cohen of Southern Poverty Law Center to speak at Wayne Law

Richard Cohen, president of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will offer a free lecture from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, at Wayne State University Law School.  His presentation, “The State of Hate and Extremism in America and the Work of the Southern Poverty Law Center,” will take place in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at the law school, 471 W. Palmer St. The free event is sponsored by the Dean’s Office, and lunch will be provided.
