 Business Law Section to discuss government investigations Nov. 20

The State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section’s Commercial Litigation Committee, In-House Counsel Committee, and Small Business Forum will present a seminar, “Governmental and Internal Investigations: What In-House and Outside Counsel Need to Know,” from 5-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Columbia Center, located at 101 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy.

Bharat Gandhi, In-House Counsel Committee Chair, and Douglas Toering of Toering Law Firm and Chair of the Commercial Litigation Committee and Small Business Forum, will moderate the event.  The speakers will include Mark Chutkow, assistant United States attorney; Thomas Cranmer of Miller Canfield; Joseph Papelian, Delphi deputy general counsel-litigation; and Richard Zuckerman of Honigman.
 
The discussion will address many scenarios.  These include advising a corporate client on an investigation by the government or representing a panicked employee who finds out the company has begun an internal investigation. The discussion will also help attorneys identify the client, address conflicts of interest, determine whether the U.S. Department of Justice (or the company) will keep the investigation confidential, and more.

Third Circuit to mark Adoption Day 2014

In recognition of Adoption Day, acknowledged both statewide and nationally, the Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan will participate in two events aimed at raising awareness about adoption opportunities in Wayne County.  The events will be both a celebration of adoptions finalized throughout the year, as well as an active recruitment effort to increase the number of potential adoptive families in the community capable of providing children in foster care with permanent, loving homes. 
 
Each event will include a panel discussion, featuring Presiding Judge Virgil C. Smith on Nov. 5, and Judge Alexis Glendening on Nov. 6, along with several community partners, such as adoption and licensing specialists, the Michigan Children’s Law Center, and individuals with personal experience navigating Michigan’s foster care system. 

In addition to the panel discussion, several foster care and adoption agencies will have informational booths where members of the public can speak directly with professionals regarding the adoption process and any other questions or concerns regarding adoption opportunities in Wayne County. 

The event on Nov. 5 will be held at the Outer Drive Faith Lutheran Church, located at 17500 James Couzens in Detroit. 

The event on Nov. 6 will be held at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, located at 18700 James Couzens in Detroit.
