LANSING (AP) — State Attorney General Bill Schuette is apologizing for his office issuing subpoenas to two journalists who interviewed prisoners or their attorney suing the state.
Schuette told reporters last week he apologized directly to reporters at Michigan Radio and the Huffington Post.
He says he immediately withdrew the subpoenas last week after learning of them. He says he was “distressed” over what the journalists went through and it “won’t happen again.”
The suit accuses prison officials of failing to prevent the sexual assault of male teen inmates.
The Huffington Post reporter was asked for notes from interviewing inmates. Michigan Radio was asked for recordings of an interview with an attorney representing prisoners.
