Drum Major for Justice

The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association, the Association of Black Judges of Michigan (ABJM), and the Wolverine Bar Association co-sponsored the 23rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition on Saturday, March 21, at the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights at Wayne State University Law School in Detroit.  Among those taking part in the competition were finalists (seated, l-r) Demetrius Bailey of Pontiac Academy for Excellence, Dajae Everette of Communication and Media Arts High School, and Jeremiah Wimberley of University of Detroit Jesuit High School; (standing) Adrian Spinks, Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Patricia Jefferson, Straker Bar President Michael Jackson, Wayne County 36th District Court Judge Demetria Brue, Keith Center for Civil Rights Director Peter Hammer, Wolverine Bar President Chantez Pattman Knowles, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Ulysses Boykin, Wayne County 36th District Court Judge David Perkins, ABJM President Wayne County Wayne County Probate Court Judge Terrance Keith, Wolverine Bar MLK Oral Advocacy Chair Joline Davis, Vasal Johnson II (Jeremiah Wimberley’s mentor), and Boyd White III.  The purpose of the competition is to promote oral advocacy among high school students and encourage them to develop and improve their analytical and writing skills.
