LANSING (AP) — State officials have shown off work now under way in the $6.4 million project to repair and update the state’s historic Capitol.
Officials said the dome work is on schedule for completion in mid-October. The overall project also includes restoration to parts of the building’s exterior.
Work crews are restoring the exterior of the dome’s exterior finishes that wasn’t completed during the last major restoration completed in 1992. The cornerstone for the Capitol was laid in 1873.
The Michigan Capitol Commission has about $3 million a year in state tobacco tax revenue for upkeep of the building.
