141st State History Conference Sept. 25-27

The Historical Society of Michigan's 141st Annual Meeting and State History Conference will be held in Saginaw on Sept. 25-27. The State History Conference is open to anyone who wishes to learn about Michigan's history and the heritage of the host area. The main sessions of the conference will take place at Saginaw Valley State University, and several other events will be held at historical venues throughout the city. The State History Awards will also be presented during the conference. Each year, the Historical Society of Michigan presents a State History Award to those individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the appreciation and understanding of Michigan history. "This year's conference offers a diverse lineup of breakout sessions and some never-before-offered sessions, such as our capstone event with the Honorable Frank J. Kelley," said Historical Society of Michigan Executive Director Larry Wagenaar. "The Saturday evening Closing Banquet, which will be held at the historic Temple Theatre, will feature an evening with the Honorable Frank J. Kelley, who will share stories from his life and many years as attorney general through a conversation with journalist Jack Lessenberry." The three-day conference also includes three keynotes: "Timber! Michigan: A Lumberman's Paradise," "A Man of Influence: Henry G. Marsh, First African-American Mayor in Saginaw," and "Up in Smoke: The 1893 Saginaw Fire"; 12 breakout sessions and four workshops; four tours; a reception and banquet, where the State History Awards will be presented; exhibitor tables; and networking opportunities. Registration for the 141st Annual Meeting and State History Conference closes September 18. After that date, registrations will be available only at the door, but meal tickets will not be available.
