Holiday Hours


The 36th District Court will be closed Thursday, Dec. 24 through Jan. 4, 2016, in observance of the holiday season. The court will be open Monday, Dec. 28, Tuesday Dec. 29, and Wednesday Dec. 30 for essential services only: Criminal - Preliminary examinations (held at FMHJ); Traffic - New case filings (drop off of tickets); Landlord-Tenant Division: Emergency eviction stays.

All offices of the United States District Court and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan will be CLOSED on Friday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday and on Friday, Jan.1, for the New Year’s holiday. In case of emergency, call 313-234-5656.

The Michigan Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals, and the State Court Administrative Office (SCAO) will be closed on Friday, Dec. 25, for the Christmas holiday and on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 31-Jan.1, for the New Year’s holiday.

The Third Circuit Court Civil, Criminal and Family Divisions will be closed Friday Dec. 25 in observance of Christmas Day.

On Monday, Dec. 28, Tuesday, Dec. 29 and Wednesday Dec. 30, the court will be open for essential services only, including criminal arraignments, probation violation and failure to appear warrants, personal protection orders, parental waivers, and other emergency civil and family division matters. The County Clerk’s office will be open to accept civil and domestic relations pleadings and new case filings from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on those days.

Many City of Detroit offices will be closed beginning Thursday, Dec. 24, in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays and reopen on Monday, Jan. 4. Normal police, fire, bus, lighting, airport and water/sewerage services will still be provided, as will the following services:

The Department of Public Works (DPW), through its contractors, will collect refuse, recycling and bulk items as scheduled on Thursday, Dec. 31. However, the City will NOT collect on Friday, Dec. 25 and January 1. During both weeks, crews will collect refuse, recycling and bulk items one day later. Friday’s collection will take place on Saturday.

The Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will operate bus service on Christmas and New Year’s Day as a Sunday schedule.  Regular weekday bus service will be provided on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31.
The Detroit People Mover will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.  Trains will operate on New Year’s Eve from 2 p.m.-3 a.m.   Normal service will resume on Saturday, Jan. 2.

In addition, these offices are open during the period of Dec. 28-30, 2015:

• Auditor General

• Department of Public Works - Solid Waste and Street Maintenance Divisions

• Detroit Water and Sewerage Department - Customer Care Centers and Call Center

• General Services Department - Limited services

• Labor Relations

• Office of the Chief Financial Officer - Assessors and Budget Offices, Treasury Office -  Teller’s Office (Suite 154), Revenue Collections (Suite 105) and Tax & Revenue Examination Office (Suite 106)

• The Citizen Tax Help Call Center will operate.  The number is (313) 224-3560.

• Pension – Offices closed except on Dec. 30 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. for will call pension checks.

• Public Lighting Department – Limited coverage on holidays
