The Macomb County courthouse was a busy place as the Macomb County Bar Foundation and Michigan Center for Civic Education recently hosted the county regional high school mock trial tournament. Students from nine high schools participated in hopes of advancing to the finals in Lansing. Among those organizing the event were (left to right): Stephen Becker, Macomb County Bar Association (MCBA) president-elect; Lori Smith, MCBA director; Dawn Prokopec, MCBA treasurer; Lori Finazzo; Renee Tegel, attorney and volunteer mock trial coordinator for Macomb County; and Linda Start, MCCE executive director. The tournament is designed to reenact much of what might take place in a trial court, with students taking on the roles of attorneys and witnesses and competing against each other in real courtrooms in front of real judges and lawyers. Nearly a dozen judges and more than 40 volunteer attorneys took part in the event.
