Court referee to run for seat on Wayne County Circuit Court

Wayne County Circuit Court Friend of the Court Referee Michelle LetourneauMcAvoy recently announced her candidacy for Wayne County Circuit Court Judge. Due to retirements, there are four non-incumbent positions open.

Letourneau-McAvoy was licensed to practice law in 1999 and has seventeen years of experience. For the past five years, she has been a Wayne County Friend of the Court Referee presiding over thousands of cases regarding child custody, support and parenting time.

"When you're sitting ... as a referee or a judge, you're impartial, you're taking both sides in, you're evaluating the whole case - truly in the bests interests of the children," said Letourneau-McAvoy.

Prior to her work as a referee, Letourneau-McAvoy was an active practicing attorney while running her law office, which employed three lawyers and three support staff. She practiced mostly in domestic relations but also has experience in statewide civil, criminal and probate litigation.

Letourneau-McAvoy was raised in Livonia and is married to Christopher McAvoy with two school age children. Her husband is a practicing lawyer with an office in Taylor.

While active in the Plymouth-Canton school district, having been part of the Student Transition Advisory Committee in connection with school closures and consolidations, she also has volunteered for First Step, a domestic violence resource agency, and Gleaners Community Food Bank.

Letourneau-McAvoy, whose campaign kickoff was held at Nemo's in Detroit on April 13, looks forward to taking her experience as a Referee to help serve the good people of Wayne County as judge, she said.
