On April 29, the incoming class at WMU-Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus participated in the law school’s orientation program, “Professionalism in Action.” In cooperation with the State Bar of Michigan, each incoming class participates in the program and is welcomed by an experienced local attorney or judge from Michigan who guides the students through a series of hypothetical problems that highlight the importance of ethics, professionalism, and civility in the practice of law.
The featured guest was Judge David Law of the 52nd District Court. Before administering the WMU-Cooley Honor Code, Law spoke to students about ethical boundaries with clients.
Law stated, “You should fiercely advocate for your clients, but never cross the line into unethical conduct or jeopardize your integrity.”
Additionally, local attorneys and judges, including Larry Nolan, WMU-Cooley graduate and board chair, led small group discussions about professional conduct and ethical dilemmas students may face during their careers.
