Bodman PLC
Bodman PLC is pleased to announce that Corp! Magazine has named the firm a “Diversity Focused Company” for 2017.
The “Diversity Focused” designation honors Michigan-based businesses that have put significant effort into making diversity a priority within their organization and the surrounding community. This year, Bodman was one of 29 companies − and the only full-service business law firm − to receive the designation.
It is the third time that Bodman has garnered honors from Corp! for its diversity initiatives based on a comprehensive review of the firm’s policies and programs.
“Diversity is one of Bodman’s Core Values and is also a priority for our clients, who have taken note of our efforts and provided positive feedback,” said Bodman Chairman Ralph E. McDowell. “Our diversity programming has enhanced the firm’s internal culture and promotes an environment that produces the progressive and creative thinking essential to providing the best legal services.”
Bodman’s focus on diversity starts with hiring and retention issues but also extends well beyond to include support for diverse law students, law schools, and community organizations. For example, Bodman works in conjunction with the Black Law Students Association at both Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy law schools to conduct career-focused programs that encourage greater diversity and multiculturalism in the legal community. The firm has also taken steps to foster an internal culture that promotes understanding of diversity issues, including implementing firm-wide diversity training, raising funds for organizations that promote diversity and inclusiveness, and scheduling group trips to the Charles H. Wright and Holocaust museums.
Bodman’s diversity programming is guided by a Diversity and Social Action Committee that monitors trends and emerging strategies, recommends and implements action plans, and reports to senior management on the firm’s progress toward achieving its diversity goals.
In addition, Bodman is pleased to announce that Charles M. Russman, chair of the firm’s Data Privacy and Security Practice Group, has earned his Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
The IAPP provides a wealth of resources for professionals in a variety of industries to enhance their knowledge of privacy law and help their clients or workplaces protect data. Russman already holds a CIPP/US certification, which is the global gold standard certification for privacy professionals, reflecting a thorough understanding of U.S. privacy laws and regulations.
In his legal practice, Russman helps clients address privacy and security concerns including establishing and clarifying record retention policies, training employees about privacy and security policies to protect customer data, and addressing privacy breaches such as hacking or loss of customer data. As chair of the Data Privacy and Security Practice Group, he oversees a talented team of attorneys helping clients of every industry sector and size to defend their data.
For those interested in learning more about GDPR, Russman will host an informative session titled “What is GDPR? The New Privacy,” on December 7 from 8 to 9 a.m. at Bodman’s Detroit office at Ford Field. Advance registration is required. For more information, contact BodmanEvents@bodmanlaw.com.

Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, & Weiss, PC’s Justin A. Hanna was named to the Michigan Lawyers Weekly “Up & Coming Lawyers Class of 2017.”
Hanna, an associate in Jaffe’s Corporate Practice Group, focuses on mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and commercial real estate transactions. Over the past 12 months, he has been involved in at least 13 of the
firm’s M&A transactions, including managing and closing his own M&A deals. Since joining the firm in 2016, he has also actively engaged a number of his own clients to work with the firm.
Hanna’s accomplishments extend to the local community. In June, Hanna established and led an effort on behalf of the firm that assisted more than 140 Iraqi nationals from the metro Detroit area who were
detained as part of a push to increase immigration enforcement. Hanna collaborated with CODE Legal Aid and recruited a team of Jaffe attorneys to file emergency motions for those individuals who did not have representation to fight their imminent deportations. With the help of the firm, he personally ensured that all the affected individuals had the proper legal representation and opportunity to address their immigration claims.
Hanna earned a law degree from Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. Concurrently while in law school, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in finance from WSU’s Mike Illitch School of Business where he was also recognized for high academic achievement. Hanna received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in management from WSU.
