A ceremony was held recently at the Macomb County Circuit Court to shine the spotlight on graduates of the county’s Veterans’ Treatment Court. The court focuses on helping veterans of the armed forces, who are charged with crimes, obtain treatment or other services to address underlying problems. The graduation ceremony was held in the courtroom of Judge Mark Switalski and a reception followed, hosted by the Friends of the Macomb County Veterans’ Treatment Court. Among those attending the ceremony were (left to right) Kumar Palepu, assistant prosecutor; Erin Smith, regional director of the Michigan Department of Corrections; Lisa Ellis, court services director; William Bailey, probation agent; Julie Bovenschen, court administrator; Jon Biernat, VTC defense counsel; Christine Landino, VTC therapist: Judge Switalski; Barbara Reyes, Veterans Justice Outreach, VA Detroit; John Walus, circuit court mentor coordinator; Lori Menzie, VTC coordinator; 41A District Court Judge Steve Sierawski; Elizabeth Darga, undersheriff; and Bob Smith, chairman of the Macomb County Board of Commissioners.
