Greg Bill, a member of the 3rd Circuit Court bench in Wayne County, was saluted February 15 as the 2018 recipient of the Kaye Tertzag Purple Sport Coat Award. The honor was bestowed at the Ninth Annual Tertzag Tribute Dinner in Dearborn.
Judge Tertzag passed away on February 4, 2009, leaving “a legacy of integrity and service to Michigan, as well as a great example of love and devotion to his family and legion of friends,” according to organizers of the event. The award is presented annually to a distinguished member of the bar who has demonstrated “excellence in the legal profession, civility in and outside the courtroom, and mentorship in the legal arena.”
“Judge Bill graduated from Cooley Law School and began his own practice with a specialization in aviation law,” said Kara Tertzag Lividini, the daughter of Judge Tertzag. “He has served the public for decades as both a Michigan State Senate legislative aide and as a 20th District Court judge before being appointed to the Wayne County Circuit Court in 2000. He currently serves in the criminal division.
“Judge Bill has been recognized by his peers before with a Michigan Special Legislative Tribute for Outstanding Service to the people of Michigan,” Lividini noted. “His judicial philosophy is guided by Socrates who once said a judge should do four things: Hear courteously, answer wisely, consider soberly, and decide impartially. Judge Bill, his wife, Cheryl, and their son, Steven are dedicated to their Northville community.”
Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kurtis Wilder served as keynote speaker at the event, which was held at Park Place Banquet Hall in Dearborn. Justice Wilder began his legal career at Foster, Swift, Collins and Swift and Butzel Long before his appointment to the Washtenaw County Circuit Court in 1992 and the Michigan Court of Appeals in 1998. After nearly 20 years of service on the Michigan Court of Appeals, he was appointed to the Michigan State Supreme Court last year.
Justice Wilder is a past president of Michigan Judges Association and the State Bar Judicial Conference.
