WMU-Cooley Law School's Lansing campus held a two-day orientation program on Aug. 25 and 26. During the program, Hon. Richard Garcia, Ingham County chief circuit and probate court judge, administered the Western Michigan University Cooley Law School honor code oath, which all entering students, faculty and staff take as a commitment to the law school's ethical standards.
During the orientation program, new students had the opportunity to gain insights about law school by asking current students questions during a panel discussion and met with members of the law school's faculty including Assistant Dean Mable Martin-Scott, who spoke about the steps it takes to become a lawyer.
Before administering the honor code to 124 incoming law students, Garcia spoke about the importance of professionalism and ethics while studying law and as a practicing attorney.
Garcia was first appointed as probate court judge in 2000. Before joining the bench, he was partner at Lansing, Michigan-based Lynch Gallagher Lynch & Martineau and has served as chair of the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, co-chair of the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes, and chair of the Michigan Bias Crime Task Force.
