ArtPrize 10 continues

As noted in these pages in past years, Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids partners with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to feature socially relevant art during ArtPrize each year.

As most people know, ArtPrize offers large monetary prizes to the winners of both a popular vote and a juried vote by a panel of art experts.

In 2018 Fountain Street has again scored a hit:?“By Her Own Hand,” an installation particularly tailored to the Fountain Street sanctuary (which has gorgeous stained glass windows, an impressive organ and a balcony), has been chosen on the short list by the jury, as well as winning the ACLU’s own prize.

Unfortunately the piece, which involves large diaphanous panels and, when seen from the balcony, stop-action film looking as if it is a ghostly image, is very difficult to do justice to in a photograph. The top photo shows it from the front, where the images can take one by surprise.

The artist, Lora Robertson, is from Newaygo, and says she was intending to show how women take on “the traditional role of custodian” in the birth-life-death cycle.

A Muskegon artist also placed in the Top 5 public vote (about 28,000 voters participated):?Tom Gifford won a place in the Two-Dimensional Category for “Michigan Effect.”
Popular voting ended midnight Oct. 4, but the works in ArtPrize 10 can be seen until Oct. 7.
