Snyder makes appointments, reappointments to seven boards and commissions
Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday announced 15 appointments and reappointments to multiple boards and commissions.
"I thank this group for their commitment to cultivating talent as well as the health and safety of all Michiganders," Snyder said.
21st Century Talent Creation Subcommittee
Members serving an initial three-year term expiring Dec. 17, 2021:
John VanWagoner, of Alpena, is the superintendent of Alpena Public Schools. Previously, he served as associate superintendent for Shiawassee Regional Education Service District and worked in various positions for the Michigan Department of Education. VanWagoner earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Saginaw Valley State University, a master's degree in athletic administration from Michigan State University, a master's degree in educational leadership from Western Michigan University, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Western Michigan University. He will represent Northern Michigan K-12 schools.
Megan Schrauben, of Dexter, is the executive director of MiSTEM Network for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget. She previously served as the director of the Jackson County Mathematics and Science Center within the Jackson County Intermediate School District. Schrauben earned her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Michigan and master's degree in engineering from Michigan Technological University. She will represent K-12 Schools.
Bill Pink, of Ada, serves as the 10th president of Grand Rapids Community College. Prior to this role, he served as vice president of academic affairs for Oklahoma State University and associate dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma. Pink earned his bachelor's degree in education from Oklahoma Christian University, Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma. He will represent urban area community colleges.
Joe Lubig, of Marquette, is the associate dean for Teacher Education and Director for the School of Education, Leadership and Public Service at Northern Michigan University. Previously, he served as an associate professor in the school of education at NMU. Lubig earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education and master's degree in educational leadership from Northern Michigan University and doctorate in educational leadership and curriculum development from Central Michigan University. He will represent public universities and colleges.
Members serving an initial two-year term expiring Dec. 17, 2020:
Mark Pogliano, of Saline, is the principal at Jackson Area Career Center. He previously served as associate dean of occupational programs for Schoolcraft College. Pogliano earned his bachelor's degree in fine arts and master's degree in business education from Eastern Michigan University and Doctor of Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix. He will represent K-12 schools.
Russ Kavalhuna, of Dearborn, is the president of Henry Ford College. He previously served as executive director of the Western Michigan University College of Aviation. Prior to this role, Kavalhuna was a commercial airline pilot for U.S. Airways Express and a federal prosecutor for the U.S. Department of Justice in Grand Rapids. Kavalhuna earned his bachelor's degree in aviation science from Western Michigan University and law degree from WMU Cooley Law School. He will represent community colleges.
Alycia Meriweather, of Detroit, is deputy superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District. She also serves as adjunct faculty for Wayne State University, a board member for the DPS Foundation, and a board member for the Mayor's Workforce Development Board. Meriweather holds a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Michigan, a master's degree in educational administration from Wayne State University and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education policy and leadership at Wayne State University. She will represent K-12 schools.
This subcommittee was created by Executive Order 2018-13.
Michigan Board of Respiratory Care
Appointment:
Matthew Anderson, of East Lansing, is the chief brand officer for the education consulting firm Engaged Education, and the chief partnership officer for the training company Dale Carnegie. He holds a bachelor's degree in hospitality business from Michigan State University and is currently pursuing master's degrees in conflict management and business administration from Sullivan University. He will represent the general public and replace Helene Wiltse.
Anderson will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2020.
Michigan Citizen-Community Emergency Response Coordinating Council
Appointment:
Steven Frisbie, of Battle Creek, is the vice president of Emergent Health Partners, Southwest Division/LifeCare Ambulance, and also serves on the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners. He previously served as an adjunct faculty member for the Emergency Medical Services program at Kellogg Community College, as an emergency medical services consultant for Anderson & Associates EMS, Inc., as an on-call firefighter II and medical first responder for Pennfield Township Fire Department, and as a paramedic for LifeCare Ambulance Service. He holds a paramedic certificate from Davenport College and a bachelor's degree in business management from Robert B. Miller College. He will represent individuals with technical expertise related to emergency response and replace Kenneth Gembel.
Reappointments:
Michael Bradley, of Stevensville, is deputy police chief for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, and previously served as chief deputy for the Berrien County Sheriff's Office. He earned an associate degree in law enforcement from Lake Michigan College and a bachelor's degree in law enforcement from Siena Heights University. He will continue to represent individuals with technical expertise related to emergency response.
Brad Smith, of Carleton, is the emergency management coordinator for the City of Dearborn. He studied emergency management and services at Henry Ford Community College, Eastern Michigan University School of Staff and Command, New Mexico Tech, Texas Engineering Extension Service, and the National Fire Academy. He will continue to represent individuals with technical expertise related to emergency response.
Members will serve a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2022.
Correctional Officers' Training Council
Appointment:
Sherman Campbell, of Jackson, is the warden at the Gus Harrison Correctional Facility in Adrian. He holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Northern Michigan University. He will represent the Michigan Department of Corrections and fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Duncan MacLaren.
Campbell will serve the remainder of a three-year term expiring March 29, 2020.
Michigan Board of Speech Language Pathology
Appointment:
Lorri Rishar Jandron, of Lansing, is CEO of the marketing and communications firm Edge Publicom. She previously served as director of community relations for Sparrow Health System. Rishar Jandron holds a bachelor's degree in English from Millersville University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree in business from Northwood University. She will represent the general public and fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Christopher Mills.
Rishar Jandron will serve the remainder of a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2019.
State Police Retirement Board
Reappointment:
Mitchell Stevens, of Gaylord, is a detective sergeant and methamphetamine investigation regional coordinator for the Michigan State Police. He previously held the position of trooper and detective trooper. Stevens earned a bachelor's degree in management and organizational development from Spring Arbor University and a master's degree in business administration from Lawrence Technological University. He will continue to represent members of the retirement system having the rank of sergeant or below.
Stevens will serve a three-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2021.
Michigan Collection Practices Board
Appointment:
John Garret Angelo, of Bloomfield Hills, is a partner of J.J. Marshall & Associates Inc. He holds a bachelor's degree in supply chain management form Michigan State University. He will represent professionals and replace Scott Prince.
Garret Angelo will serve a four-year term expiring June 30, 2022.
