Commission poised to seek AG’s opinion on LGBT protections

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Civil Rights Commission is poised to ask the new attorney general to reconsider her predecessor’s opinion that state law doesn’t protect LGBT people from discrimination .

The commission will decide Monday whether to make the request to Attorney General Dana Nessel at its scheduled meeting in the Detroit suburb of Warren.

The commission in July directed the Michigan Department of Civil Rights to continue investigating complaints based on sexual orientation and gender identity, despite then-Attorney General Bill Schuette’s opinion. He said last year the board overstepped when it said the state’s civil rights law covered those categories.

Department director Agustin Arbulu said last year the commission wasn’t bound by Schuette’s opinion. Schuette’s office said it was binding on state agencies.

Nessel’s office declined to comment before receiving a request.

OCBA to host seminar on representing clients with mental illness

Handling a case in which a person has a mental health condition, developmental disability or substance abuse disorder can be challenging. The Oakland County Bar Association, in conjunction with the Oakland County Health Network, has assembled a panel of experts to provide an in-depth look at resources and legal strategies for representing someone with a mental health condition.

“Representing the Client with Mental Illness” takes place on Friday, February 1 from 9 a.m. – noon at the Oakland Community Health Network in Troy.

Any lawyer who may represent a person with a mental health condition, substance use disorder, or intellectual or developmental disability, court appointed counsel, judges, new lawyers, paralegals, or law students should plan to attend.

Topics of discussion will include:

• Services available for adults with mental illness, including treatment, case management, psychiatric, and therapy services, as well as suicide prevention resources.

• Resources available for people with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (I/DD), including supports coordination, autism services, therapy, and respite services.

• Overview of additional supports such as care coordination, residential, and guardianship.

• Legal remedies for these clients, such as Kevin’s Law / Assisted Outpatient Treatment (AOT), treatment courts, pick up orders / involuntary hospitalization, emergency mental health services, and jail diversion.

This seminar has been approved as three hours continuing legal education training for attorneys on the criminal and juvenile appointment lists in Oakland County.

The event is free to MIDC Court Appointed Attorneys only.

To register, visit www.ocba.org, and select Events/MIDC Training. For questions, contact the Oakland County Bar Association at 248-334-3400.
