Man charged in theft of cellphone from courtroom bench
MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) — A cellphone left unattended on a courtroom bench proved too enticing a target for a suburban Detroit man appearing before the judge on another matter.
The Macomb County prosecutor’s office said the man was waiting to be sentenced in Macomb Circuit Court for a traffic case when he saw the phone on the bench in front of him.
He sat down beside the phone, placed his hat atop it before sliding the phone into his pocket.
The phone’s owner returned and asked a courtroom deputy for assistance when he saw it had been removed. The deputy reviewed the courtroom’s
video feed which recorded the theft.
The Eastpointe man is charged with larceny in a building in connection with the stolen phone.
Former union official sentenced in federal corruption probe
DETROIT (AP) — A former United Auto Workers vice president has been sentenced to 15 months in prison in a scheme that funneled cash from a job training center in Detroit toward personal uses.
Norwood Jewell appeared Monday in federal court in Detroit. He’s the highest ranking labor official charged and the eighth person sentenced in the ongoing investigation into illegal payoffs to UAW officials.
The center was financed by Fiat Chrysler. Former Fiat Chrysler executive Al Iacobelli is serving a 5½-year prison sentence.
Jewell, 61, pleaded guilty in April. His plea agreement listed $60,000 in meals and golf paid with training center credit cards. Credit cards also were used for more than $40,000 in purchases for Jewell and others.
Florida woman says toilet exploded after lightning strike
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman says lightning destroyed her septic tank and caused a toilet in her house to explode.
Marylou Ward tells television station WINK News that the sole toilet in her Port Charlotte home was shattered into hundreds of pieces on Sunday.
Ward says the explosion was the loudest sound she’s ever heard, and that she also smelled smoke. She says a plumber told her lightning hit the methane gas that was built up in the pipes from feces.
Ward says she’ll have to get the toilet and septic system repaired, but she’s thankful no one was injured.
Boy calls 911 to order pizza, gets lesson and a pie
SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — A Florida boy who called 911 to report he was hungry and wanted a pizza got a lesson in proper emergency call etiquette, but he also got a pie.
The Sanford Police Department said in a Facebook post that the hungry 5-year-old called 911 last Friday.
Three officers responded to the home in suburban Orlando for a well-being check. They met with the boy and his older sister, who told them they were fine and that her brother had used the phone without her knowledge.
The officers explained that the 911 system is only for emergencies. Then they went to Pizza Hut and brought a large pizza back to the house.
