Report: Half of juvenile lifers in Michigan are awaiting sentencing

DETROIT (AP) — A newspaper reports more than half of Michigan inmates who are eligible for resentencing following a 2016 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on so-called juvenile lifers still are waiting to learn their fate.

The Detroit Free Press reports its analysis found nearly 200 inmates, or about 55 percent of those eligible, haven’t gotten new sentencing hearings. As of early July, the newspaper says 86 of the state’s 354 juvenile lifers have been released.

Tina Olson, an attorney with the Michigan State Appellate Defender Office, says: “We are not resolving cases at the rate that you would hope, given that the United States Supreme Court said these sentences should be rare.”

Prosecutors defend the process and say they’re thoughtfully weighing each case.

LANSING (AP) — Off-road vehicle enthusiasts can explore Michigan's 3,700 miles of trails and five "scramble" areas that are open to them for no charge this weekend.

All rules pertaining to ORVs still apply. But riders on designated routes and trails will not need an ORV license or trail permit Saturday and Sunday.

A Recreation Passport is required where applicable, such as the scramble areas.

They include the St. Helen's Motorsport Area in Roscommon County; the Black Lake Scramble Area in Cheboygan County; Silver Lake State Park in Oceana County; Bull Gap in Oscoda County and The Mounds in Genesee County.

Raccoon freed after being trapped in vending machine

DELTONA, Fla. (AP) — Police say a raccoon trapped in a vending machine at a Florida high school is now free.

Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant says a deputy stationed at Pine Ridge High School was notified of the trapped raccoon Wednesday and called animal control for assistance.

A vending machine operator was also contacted to unlock the door.

They rolled the vending machine to an open area of the school and after about two hours the raccoon was set free.

A photo on the sheriff’s Facebook page shows the raccoon making itself comfortable in between snacks.

Sheriff's officials joked that the “gentleman” was apprehended for burglary of a vending machine.
