Appeal planned after case dismissed against ex-priest

ANN ARBOR (AP) — State prosecutors say they’ll appeal a decision that dismissed sexual abuse charges against a former Michigan priest.

Ann Arbor Judge Joseph Burke ruled recently that the statute of limitations had run out on charges against Timothy Crowley of Tempe, Arizona. He was among five former priests charged in May by the attorney general's office.

The 70-year-old Crowley was accused of criminal sexual conduct between 1982 and 1990. He worked at churches in Jackson, Ann Arbor and Hillsdale. The judge said the allegations are “horrible.”

Defense attorney Joe Simon says Burke “did the right thing” by dismissing the case. He says the attorney general’s office knew the case was too old. But prosecutors still believe the case can stand.

The Lansing Diocese paid $200,000 to Crowley’s accuser in 1993.

Theater apologizes after Indian character wears red makeup

FENTON (AP) — A community theater has apologized after an American Indian character wore red makeup during a production of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

The Flint Journal reports that the director and the producer of the show at Fenton Village Players were replaced.

The makeup was used on Sept. 27 on the character Chief Bromden, who has an important role in the play. The actor who played the chief was following orders. The theater posted an apology on Facebook.

Daniel Ragan, who serves as chairman of the theater, says the director has “artistic liberty with the script.” But he says a plan to use red makeup on an Indian character should have been brought to the theater’s board.

Three UP school administrators lose hair in fundraising bet

RUDYARD (AP) — Well, they asked for it.

The superintendent, athletic director and a principal sat down to have their heads shaved Friday in an Upper Peninsula school district after the Rudyard football team met a $5,000 fundraising goal.

The Sault News says Mark Pavloski, Chad Folkersma and John Krentz had agreed to the ultimate haircut if the goal was reached. Football coach Jim Suggitt says money came from as far as Hamtramck in the Detroit area.

He says the $5,000 goal was met in just 19 days.

Woman hides in store’s ceiling to avoid shoplifting arrest

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida woman faces multiple charges after authorities say she climbed into the ceiling of a Big Lots store to avoid a shoplifting arrest.

A Charlotte County Sheriff's Office news release says 37-year-old Kristina Perkins went into the store's restroom on Friday and removed some tiles so she could climb into the ceiling.

Deputies removed tiles from several spots in a five-hour effort to catch Perkins. The news release says she ignored commands to come down and instead moved to other sections of the ceiling. A deputy stayed behind when the search was called off and saw Perkins climbing down from the ceiling.

She was arrested on charges of criminal mischief, petit theft and resisting law enforcement.
