Get to Know Sydney Steele

An attorney with Foster Swift in Southfield, Sydney Steele grew up in Flushing, in Genesee County, and graduated from Powers Catholic High school in 2012. She spent much of her childhood and teen-age years sailing in Petoskey on Lake Michigan and dancing ballet at the Flint Institute of Music.

Steele attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison where she graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in political Science from the L&S Honors College, and also received a certificate in environmental studies and integrated liberal studies. While in college she interned with numerous nonprofits and political organizations.

Steele earned her J.D. from Wayne State University Law School where she was a moot court oralist and writer. While in law school she worked at the Michigan Attorney General’s Office in the department of Children and Youth Services and at the Legal Advocacy for People with Cancer Clinic.

In the summer of 2018, Steele joined Foster Swift Collins and Smith as a summer associate and is now an associate attorney at Foster Swift in General Commercial Litigation.
Steele lives in Fenton her husband, Nate Adams, an orthopedic surgery resident at McLaren Flint, and with her dog, Porter. 

Why did you become a lawyer? To help people.

What’s your favorite law-related book? Franz Kafka’s “The Trial.”

Who are your law role models – real and/or fictional? Cicero, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Alexander Hamilton, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, and my Dad.

What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Work on your writing and get as much practical experience as you can.

What’s your proudest moment as a lawyer? When my dad motioned for me to be sworn in as an attorney.

What do you do to relax? Anything outdoors. I like to run, kayak, bike, paddle board, and hike.  

What other career path might you have chosen? Professor in political theory.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? I would trade places with a famous dancer or someone who performs on Broadway.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self?
Be nicer to your mom.

Favorite app? Podcasts.

Favorite music? Country.

What are your most treasured material possessions? My wedding ring, and a stuffed animal bunny my parents gave me when I was a child.

What do you wish someone would invent? Something that would read my mind, edit my thoughts, and then respond appropriately to the emails I receive.

What has been your favorite year so far?  2016, my senior year of college. I was accepted to law school, I took some of my favorite classes, and lived with 10 of my best friends.

What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? Northern Michigan.

If you could have one super power, what would it be? Teleportation. I could easily travel the world and skip traffic on my way to work.

What’s one thing you would like to learn to do? I would like to learn how to garden like (British television presenter from Gardeners’ World) Monty Don.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I started skiing shortly after I learned to walk. I ski less often now, but I am still pretty good!

If you could have dinner with three people, past or present, who would they be? Mary Berry, Tina Fey, and J.R.R Tolkien.

Favorite place to spend money? Local restaurants. 

What is your motto? Be kind and never give up.

What is the most unusual thing you have done? I used to read Tarot cards.
