Law firm continues commitment to Detroit Fire Department with donation of 500 smoke alarms

Farmington Hills-based law firm Fabian, Sklar, King, & Liss PC, representing victims of fires and explosions, businesses and homeowners in property damage disputes for 35 years, will donate 500 10-year, sealed lithium battery-operated smoke alarms to the Detroit Fire Department (DFD) in honor of Fire Prevention Week—which takes place Oct. 3-9. Stuart Sklar, shareholder of Fabian, Sklar, King, & Liss, made the announcement.

Fabian, Sklar, King, & Liss has supplied the DFD with more than 5,000 of these life-saving devices over the course of more than 10 years. The donated smoke alarms are distributed to Detroit residents upon request and installed free of charge by members of the DFD.

“Functioning smoke alarms are an essential part of any safe household,” said Sklar. “We know these devices save lives. We thank the DFD for their service to the community and for keeping Detroiters safe every day and our firm is honored to donate these smoke alarms to help continue those efforts.”

The 2021 National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Prevention Week theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” This speaks directly to the importance of identifying the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and that when an alarm makes noise—a beeping or chirping sound—you must take action. This places critical importance on ensuring working smoke alarms are installed in homes and changed every 10 years. If the alarm is not a sealed 10-year model, residents should change the batteries at least every six months.

To request the installation of a smoke alarm free of charge, Detroit residents should contact the Detroit Fire Department at 313-596-2959. To learn more about Fire Prevention Week, visit the NFPA website at www.nfpa.org.
