Law + blog = BLAWGS: Top legal blogs highlighted in ABA publication

For the third consecutive year, the ABAJournal has identified the 100 best legal blogs. The editors' selection process this year was aided by a new feature called "Blawg Amici." The Journal's readers were asked to weigh in on their top picks, making a case for their favorites in 500 characters or less. This reader-engagement outreach uncovered 40 new entries previously unknown to the Journal. The top 100 are catalogued on the Journal's Web site in an online Blawg Directory that features more than 2,500 law blawgs. "We wanted to make this Blawg 100 more participatory to reflect the social media movement," said Ed Adams, editor and publisher of the ABA Journal. "ABAJournal.com is always looking for new ways to involve our audience in our stories and storytelling. This was a natural place to solicit their input." Twitter handles were another new feature in the blog listings in 2009. "This is decidedly the year of Twitter. More than 70 of the Blawgs on our list this year have an accompanying Twitter feed," said Adams. This year's categories include news, legal theory, criminal justice, legal technology and the business of law. There are practice-specific blogs, and blogs devoted to geographic areas featuring content relevant only to people in their own "neck of the woods," according to the introduction of the list. On the career side, there's a category devoted to job postings and empathizing with fellow lawyers who've lost their jobs or are otherwise experiencing disruption in a changing profession. There's even a category called "On the lighter side." Readers are urged to visit www.ABAJournal.com/blawg100 to vote for their favorites in each of the 10 categories. Votes will be tallied in December and winners will be announced in the February 2010 edition of the Journal. Published: Fri, Dec 11, 2009
