How Suite it is: Attorneys not only share office space, they share generosity
By Christine L. Mobley
Legal News
Switching from "Secret Santa" gifts for the opportunity to give to those in need was the impetus of Suite 111.
Suite 111 is made up of several different attorneys who inhabit --of all places -- Suite 111 in Stoneridge Complex at 40900 Woodward Ave in Bloomfield Hills.
Individuals would draw names and participate in a "Secret Santa" gift exchange each holiday season until a suggestion went out to do something more.
"There's so much need out there," Molly Taylor, office manager at Resnick & Moss PC, noted of Suite 111's charitable giving.
According to Taylor, the call went out for donating gifts the first time last year. "Rather than buy a small gift (for one another) that probably none of us need, why not bring a wrapped gift for the homeless.?"
The response, Taylor notes, was overwhelming.
"There were tons of gifts," she said. Gift cards, gloves, hats and scarves, along with other items were brought to Suite 111's holiday party.
The bountiful donation was then given to the homeless through a program known as MCREST (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team).
The purpose of the MCREST program is to provide temporary shelter for the homeless in Macomb County through its 84 participating churches which house the homeless for a week at a time.
This year, Suite 111 decided to continue with its charitable giving and contacted Michigan Department of Human Services Community Resource Coordinator Lynn Contreras to see where donations could be put to the best use.
According to Contreras, the sponsorships for the DHS holiday gift giving program were down this year and it was looking doubtful that all of the foster children would get gifts.
Suite 111 originally committed to sponsoring four foster children and when the call was sent out this year the response was such that Taylor contacted Contreras to increase the number of kids to six.
A couple of phone calls more and when everything was said and done, 10 foster children ended up being the beneficiaries of Suite 111's philanthropy.
"They really came through," said Contreras.
"And because of their generosity -- and the generosity of others like them -- all of the children on the wish list received a gift," he said. "Their gifts took first prize for the most beautifully wrapped gifts,"
Contreras added. "What child doesn't love opening a beautifully wrapped package?"
Those who occupy and take part in the generous giving of Suite 111 are:
* Resnick & Moss PC - attorneys H. Nathan Resnick, Leigh Dones Moss, Timothy Orlando, Sandra Alexander, and Patrick Butler; and Molly Taylor, (office manager); legal assistants Helen Levine and Joan Abdelnour; and Anita Karmo (receptionist/secretary).
* Michael A. Bank of The Law Firm of Michael A. Bank.
* Attorney Leslie Greenwald.
* Office of Susan E. Cohen - Susan E. Cohen and Angela Soderberg (legal assistant).
* Gornbein Smith Peskin-Shepherd PLLC - attorneys Henry S. Gornbein, Danielle A. Smith, Alisa Peskin-Shepherd, and Mary Ann Noonan; and assistants Wendy Golding, Janice Glover, Ana Alfaro, and Sandra Cowan.
* Attorney Leslie N. Greenwald and assistant Camille Pietrasinski
* Steven G. Cohen of Cohen & Associates PC.
"This is a good group of people," Taylor says. And although attorneys are not necessarily always cast in the best light, Taylor adds, "These attorneys are very knowledgeable, but not only that, they're very moral, very ethical, and honest and willing to go the extra mile for others less fortunate."
