'Suspicious' passenger delays flight from Detroit

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) -- An Oklahoma-bound flight was delayed several hours in Detroit as police questioned a suspicious passenger and searched the plane but found no threat, officials said.

The crew of Pinnacle Airlines Flight 3697 delayed takeoff Tuesday night and notified airport police after noticing a boarding passenger's behavior at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, said airline spokesman Joe Williams. Other passengers were taken off the plane as it was searched.

Airport spokesman Mike Conway said the man was showing "suspicious behavior," but police determined he did not pose a threat after conducting a background check and interviewing the man.

Conway and Williams wouldn't elaborate on the man's behavior or what caught the crew's attention. Williams said the man was allowed to re-board the flight.

Gun stashed in girl's book bag gets dad probation

DETROIT (AP) -- A Detroit man who stashed a loaded handgun in his 10-year-old daughter's book bag has agreed to serve two years' probation and attend parenting classes.

Darnell London, 31, was sentenced Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court.

London pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Fleeing and resisting police charges were dropped. Prosecutors had said Detroit police officers tried to stop London for speeding and a seat belt infraction in September when he stopped the vehicle and ran away with his daughter. When they were apprehended, a loaded pistol was found in the child's bag.

Study: Corporate charter schools more segregated

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- A new study says corporate-run charter schools tend to be more segregated by race and income than nearby public schools.

Western Michigan University professor Gary Miron and colleagues say charter schools generally are "strongly racially segregative" compared to surrounding districts.

The study was jointly published by the Arizona State University and the University of Colorado. It's based on 2006-07 data from 968 schools run by education management groups.

The pro-charter school Mackinac Center for Public Policy says charters teach only 3 percent of children and have little effect on segregation.
