California man charged with cyber-extortion

NEW YORK (AP) -- A California man has been charged with attempting to extort $200,000 from a New York-based life insurance company by threatening to muddy the company's name with cyber spam.

Anthony Digati was arrested Monday morning at his home in Chino, Calif.

The 52-year-old defendant was charged with one count of extortion through interstate communications. Authorities say he threatened to send millions of e-mails to drag the company's name and reputation "through the muddiest waters imaginable" in retaliation for the company denying his claim.

The company's name was not released by federal prosecutors.

New trial ordered for man convicted in deaths of 5 teens

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- A New Orleans judge has ordered a new trial for the man convicted of gunning down five teens as they sat in an SUV.

Orleans Parish Criminal District Court Judge Lynda Van Davis issued her ruling Monday.

Among the reasons for a new trial was a videotape of a defense witness being questioned, a tape that was only recently turned over to the defense.

A jury ordered the death penalty for Anderson in August 2009 in the deaths of 16-year-old Arsenio Hunter, his 19-year-old brother Markee Hunter, 17-year-old Warren Simeon and two 19-year-olds, Iraum Taylor and Reggie Dantzler.

The shootings on June 17, 2006, brought National Guard troops back to New Orleans to help curb violence in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

New Jersey

NJ high court: No campaign cash for legal defense

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The New Jersey Supreme Court says a convicted politician cannot use leftover campaign funds to pay off his legal bills.

Former state Sen. Wayne Bryant sought to use more than $600,000 from his campaign war chest to help pay his legal defense against federal corruption charges.

The former chairman of the powerful Senate Budget Committee was convicted of steering millions in state grants to a state medical and dental school in exchange for a low-show, pension-enhancing job. Bryant is currently serving a federal prison term.

New Jersey's Election Law Enforcement Division said the funds were off-limits because defense costs do not count as an ordinary expense for an office holder.

An appeals court agreed and Bryant appealed to the Supreme Court.
