Butzel Long

BUTZEL LONG has announced the following attorneys have been named shareholders: WILLIAM J. KLIFFEL, JEFFREY D. MOSS, JENNIFER E. POWELL, and THOMAS L. SHAEVSKY. Moss, Powell and Shaevsky were previously senior attorneys with the firm.

Kliffel, based in Butzel Long's Detroit office, practices in the area of business litigation. He has experience in the area of asbestos defense litigation, including product identification, liability issues, appearance work and medical aspects of defense of both manufacturers and suppliers.

He also has experience in the defense of automotive negligence, premises liability, medical malpractice and products liability cases. Kliffel is a member of the State Bar of Michigan.

Kliffel is a graduate of Wayne State University Law School ( 1993) and The University of Michigan (B.A., 1987). He has a strong command of the French language.

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Moss has transactional experience with an emphasis on tax planning. As tax issues arise in many different types of transactions and situations, Moss has worked with corporations, limited liability companies, entrepreneurs, physicians and real estate developers to achieve their business and tax goals.

In the nonprofit area, Moss has experience forming and qualifying entities as tax exempt under federal tax law, both for charitable and medical purposes. He has many physician and medical practitioner clients and has been actively involved in issues confronting medical professionals, including practice formation and separation, buy-sell agreements, estate planning and asset protection solutions, LLCs and other healthcare transactions.

Moss acts as the publisher of the Butzel Long Income Tax Newsletter and has published many other articles as well. He is a frequent speaker on tax and tax-related topics.

Moss is an honors of the James Madison College at Michigan State University (B.A., 1990), the University of Michigan Law School (1993) and he earned a Master's Degree in Taxation from Wayne State University Law School (1999).

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Powell's practice is focused on business, corporate and transactional matters, including: mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations; corporate finance and securities; and corporate governance and compliance. Prior to joining Butzel Long, Powell represented corporate clients as an associate at Goodwin Procter, LLP in Boston and interned at the Department of Justice Office of International Affairs.

Powell is a member of the Boston, Oakland County and American Bar Associations and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Michigan.

Powell is a graduate of The George Washington University Law School (2000), and Georgetown University (B.S. Foreign Service, 1995).

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Shaevsky practices in the area of employee benefits. He advises profit and nonprofit employers, as well as individuals, on compliance and planning issues pertaining to retirement and welfare plan issues. His experience includes counseling on fiduciary duty compliance, prohibited transaction avoidance and correction, reporting and disclosure issues, mergers and acquisitions due diligence, QDROs, as well as COBRA, HIPAA, and other benefits issues. Shaevsky represents clients undergoing IRS and U.S. Department of Labor audits.

Prior to joining Butzel Long, Shaevsky was engaged as in-house counsel to Comerica Bank's Institutional Trust Department, counseling and advising business owners and managers with regard to retirement plan issues and general compliance issues.

Shaevsky also has experience counseling public entities on Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, and conflict of interest issues.

Shaevsky is the chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He also is the chair of the Employee Benefits Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Employee Benefits Conference (2008-2009). He served as a member of the West Bloomfield Township Wetland Review Board (2007-2009). Shaevsky also is a member of the American Bar Association (taxation section).

Shaevsky is a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School (1992), and the University of Michigan (B.A., 1989). Immediately following law school graduation, Shaevsky served as a law clerk to the U.S. District Court Judge John Feikens , Eastern District of Michigan.

Butzel Long also announces that shareholder BETH S. GOTTHELF moderated a panel presentation during the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) Alternative Energy Conference on March 3. The theme for the event was: "Creating Solutions, Driving Change." Gotthelf moderated a panel with the following theme: "Success Stories and Opportunities." Butzel Long is a co-sponsor of the program.

In addition, she is a vice chair of the Planning Committee for the American Bar Association (ABA) Environmental Section Eastern Water Resources Conference May 20-21, 2010 in Orlando. The theme of the conference is: "Surplus and Scarcity: Adapting to Hydrologic Disruption in the East."

Based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office, Gotthelf heads up the environmental, energy and land use practice. She represents and counsels a diverse mix of clients in numerous matters throughout the country. These matters include alternative energy, start ups, environmental compliance and permitting; responding to an emergency; military contracting, siting new facilities; state and federal civil and criminal enforcement; compliance audits; brownfields; tax incentives (obtaining, selling, purchasing); remediation of contaminated sites; Planned Unit Developments (PUDs); insurance claims; administrative procedures; solid and hazardous waste; landfills; composting; occupational safety and health; transportation; and land use.

Gotthelf is president of the Great Lakes Guardian for water protection, general counsel to the Michigan Association of Metal Finishers, Chair of the Birmingham Brownfield Authority, and former general counsel to the Wayne County Brownfield Authority.

She has been very active in the State Bar of Michigan, Environmental Law Section, including serving as past chair of the Section.

She is co chair of the American Bar Association ("ABA") Section of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law, Teleconference Committee, vice Chair of an upcoming Water Conference, and Vice Chair of the Water Quality and Wetlands Committee. She is past chair of the Environmental Law Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association and is a past member of the State Bar Representative Assembly on behalf of Oakland County.

PLUNKETT COONEY senior environmental attorney and noted "green" blogger SAULIUS K. MIKALONIS has partnered with Thomas M. Cooley Law School to create the school's first ever class on sustainability issues.

"It's an exciting challenge to teach a brand new course on such a rapidly changing subject," said Mikalonis, who is the author of MLive.com's The Green Blawg. "I'm passionate about environmental law and sustainability issues, and I look forward to introducing the Cooley Law students to this new course."

During the 15-week winter semester, Mikalonis will teach the two-hour course called "Sustainable Development Law and Policy," which is an approved elective for the environmental law track of Cooley's Public Law Concentration.

The course will introduce students to sustainability concepts and the legal, regulatory and corporate governance standards that now require or pressure businesses to implement sustainability practices, including programs for tracking related metrics and incentives for launching so-called "green" initiatives.

The syllabus, which Mikalonis developed from scratch because there is no textbook on the subject, includes such topics as environmentalism, an introduction to sustainability and related legal issues/incentives, green buildings, sustainable land use, Brownfield redevelopment and alternative energy technologies, among others.

As a member of the Plunkett Cooney's Energy Industry and Corporate/Transactional practice groups, Mikalonis practices primarily in the areas of environmental, natural resources and energy law with particular emphasis on greenhouse gases, renewable energy and green building/LEED.

Mikalonis represents clients in commercial and real estate transactions involving the development of environmentally sensitive and Brownfield sites and due diligence in complex transactions, including the identification, allocation and reduction of environmental risks.

A member of the firm's Bloomfield Hills office, Mikalonis has published on environmental law and green topics and is a frequent speaker on these topics for professional and business organizations.
