Courts - Mississippi Night court hits snag

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Just a month after it began, Hinds County's night court has hit a snag.
Night proceedings will be halted if state and county officials do not reach an agreement within the next few months regarding overtime for the sheriff's deputies who guard the court.
Officials have halted filing new cases until an agreement is reached.
The sheriff's department has tapped five deputies to work overtime four nights a week. But because the department does not have an overtime budget, Chief Deputy Steve Pickett said those deputies are given comp time instead.
Chancery Judge Denise Sweet Owens said Monday she and the special masters hear 60 to 70 cases each night. She has said she hoped the program would last at least through the end of the year.
