Nation - San Juan attorney receives ABA award

The American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section is honoring Manuel San Juan of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with its Pursuit of Justice Award. San Juan is the first lawyer from Puerto Rico to receive the award, which recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and who excel in providing access to justice for all. The award will be presented during the Spring Leadership Meeting of TIPS in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ceremony will be held at the Welcome, Diversity & Pursuit of Justice Award Reception, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. "TIPS is proud to honor Manuel San Juan with the Pursuit of Justice Award. Not only has he dedicated much of his practice to serving the poor and the disenfranchised, he has also served the courts, the legal profession and his community in a variety of leadership positions. He is an extremely successful lawyer who has done well by doing good, and is a prime example of the type of professional this award represents," said TIPS Chair John Tarpley of Nashville, Tenn. San Juan is in private practice where his areas of practice include aviation, civil and criminal litigation, civil rights, ethics and professional responsibility, federal trial and appeals, medical malpractice and personal injury. He was admitted to the Puerto Rico, U.S. District Court, District of Puerto Rico and U.S. Court of Appeals, First Circuit in 1989; the U.S. Court of Appeals, Third Circuit in 1995; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit in 2003. San Juan was president of the Young Lawyers Division for the Bar Association of Puerto Rico from 1993-94, and president of the Federal Bar Association from 1997-98. He has served in many roles in the ABA including state delegate for Puerto Rico from 1999-2008, as a member of the Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility in 2004, and as the representative for the First Circuit from 2004-07 on the Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary. He was a member of the Civil Justice Reform Act Committee for the District of Puerto Rico in 1991. San Juan served as law clerk to Chief Judge Juan M. Pérez-Giménez, U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, from 1988-89. In 1995, he was adjunct professor of ethics and constitutional law at Interamerican University School of Law. San Juan was also associated with the firm of Jiménez Graffam & Lausell from 1989-96 where he became partner for his last two years with the firm. He has been a member of the board of directors for the Puerto Rico Legal Services Corporation, the Puerto Rico Board of Bar Examiners, the U.S. Magistrate Merit Selection Panel, the Federal Bar Examination Committee and the District Representative, Criminal Justice Act Panel.
